Biography

Dr James Carr lectures in the Department of Sociology in the University of Limerick. In 2010, he was awarded a three-year scholarship for his doctoral studies from the Irish Research Council to engage in research into racism directed towards Muslim communities in Ireland at the University of Limerick. He is a well-known speaker on the topics of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim racism in Ireland. Building on previous scholarly and policy oriented publications, in 2016, James published his book Experiences of Islamophobia: Living with Racism in the Neoliberal Era (London and New York: Routledge (paperback since 2018) which focused on anti-Muslim racism in Ireland set to the international context. James has also undertaken and published research with the Immigrant Council of Ireland, supported by the Open Society Foundations, entitled 'Islamophobia in Dublin: Experiences and how to respond'; the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe; the Islamic Conference Youth Forum among others. He has published a number of peer-reviewed journal articles, as well as acting as editor for same and co-editor on the recently published collection of essays Public and Political Discourses of Migration, London: Rowman and Littlefield; and two edited collections, leading one, with Routledge London on the topic of Football, Politics and Identity.
James has also been a regular contributor to the Yearbook of Muslims in Europe for Ireland (Leiden: Brill); as well as authoring the Irish submission to the European Islamophobia Report  for 2015-2020 (Ankara: SETA). In 2022, James received funding from the European Commission via the Citizens Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) programme for his project titled: Sustainable Alliances Against Anti-Muslim Hatred (SALAAM). The project will run until 2024.

Research Interests

My research interests include 'race', racisms and in particular anti-Muslim racism; issues of  intersectionality; masculinity studies; hate crime; political economy and social exclusion. In terms of methodological skills, I am trained in both quantitative and qualitative research methods of data collection and analysis. I have a partiuclar interest in mixed methods approach to research although the majority of my work to date has used qualitative research approaches. I am experienced in using NVivo Qualitative Analytic software as well as SPSS and Stata packages for quantitative statistical analysis.

Teaching Interests

Professionalism and a strong ethic of care for students are central pillars of my pedagogic philosophy. As the attached documents demonstrate, I have taught across a number of areas in the discipline of sociology. In my most recent role of Teaching Assistant in UL I was the lead faculty member across a number of courses in sociology with a responsibility for the care of almost five-hundred students. At undergraduate level I have lectured from first to fourth year students; I have lectured, tutored and graded assignments for Introductory Sociology Modules; Qualitative Research Methods (undergraduate and graduate), Sociology of Media Audiences; Inequality and Social Exclusion; and I have also been the lead lecturer in the Introductory Sociology module delivered for mature students in Limerick’s Downtown Centre on behalf of UL. I have also successfully supervised three Masters Students with their MA dissertations. Teaching students from such a diverse range of educational experiences has given me the opportunity to develop my own pedagogical skills and ability to communicate clearly and effectively on a range of topics. In all cases, I always prioritise making the teaching and learning of sociology an interesting, interactive experience while concomitantly ensuring that students are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in their studies.
