Biography

Dr John Lombard is an Associate Professor (A) in medical law and intellectual property law in the School of Law University of Limerick. He completed his LLB (Law and European Studies) at UL before going on to study for an LLM and PhD in UCC. In 2018, Dr Lombard completed a Grad Dip in Teaching, Learning & Scholarship in UL. Prior to his appointment in UL, Dr Lombard worked in the School of Law and Social Justice at the University of Liverpool where he lectured in medical law and equity.

Dr Lombard’s research interests lie primarily in the area of medical law. He has researched extensively in the area of end-of-life care. In 2018, his research monograph ‘Law, Palliative Care, and Dying: Legal and Ethical Challenges’ was published by Routledge. Details of this book can be found at: https://www.routledge.com/Law-Palliative-Care-and-Dying-Legal-and-Ethical-Challenges/Lombard/p/book/9780367894504 More recently, Dr Lombard has completed a text titled ‘Nursing Law in Ireland’. This was published by Clarus Press in 2021. Details of this book can be found at: https://www.claruspress.ie/shop/nursing-law-in-ireland/

In support of his research, Dr Lombard, has been awarded funding in excess of €650,000. These awards have come from the Irish Research Council, the Royal Irish Academy, the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission, the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, various University of Limerick funding initiatives, and competitive research tenders. This funding has largely been linked to projects which explore law in action and seek to understand and unpick the challenges of effectively translating law into policy and practice.

Research Interests

My research interests lie in the areas of Medical Law, Bioethics, and Intellectual Property Law. In Medical Law, I am interested in the legal and ethical issues that arise at the end of life, as well as the development and impact of public health regulations that shape how we live and work.

In the area of Intellectual Property Law I am especially interested in copyright, particularly the protection of new and atypical works.
