Biography

Shane Kilcommins is a graduate of UL (BA in Law and European Studies, 1994) the University of Wales, Aberystwyth (PhD, 1999), and UCC (MA in Teaching and Learning, 2007). He joined the Law Faculty, UCC in 2001, was made a senior lecturer in 2006, and a professor in 2012. He joined the Law School in UL as a professor in 2014. He lectures in Evidence Law, Jurisprudence, Penology, and Employment Law. He was a Visiting Scholar at Temple Law School in 2008/2009. He has co-authored various funded research reports on discrimination, victims of crime, and integrative learning. He is co-editor of the Criminal Law Online Journal and is book editor for the Irish Journal of Legal Studies. He acted as deputy editor of the Judicial Studies Institute Journal between 2007 and 2010. He is the recipient of a number of prizes and scholarships including the Holmes O’Malley Sexton scholarship for first place in undergraduate law at UL, a departmental scholarship to undertake his doctorate at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth in 1994, the President’s Prize for excellence in teaching in 2006, and a Fulbright scholarship to undertake research in the US in 2008. He has acted as co-director for the Centre for Criminal Justice and Human Rights at UCC, and is currently a director of the Association for Criminal Justice Research and Development. He is an examiner for the Law Society of Ireland in criminal law and criminal law and criminal procedure, and acts as an external examiner for Trinity College, UCD, DCU, DIT, and AIT. His book publications include The Introduction of Community Service Orders (Barry Rose Law Publishers, 2003), Alcohol, Society, and Law (Barry Rose Law Publishers, 2002) (co-editor), Crime, Punishment and the Search for Order in Ireland (IPA, 2004) (co-author), Terrorism, Rights and the Rule of Law (Willan, 2008), Criminal Law in Ireland (Clarus Press, 2010) (co-author), and Regulatory Crime in Ireland (First Law, 2010) (co-editor). He has written various articles on penology and criminal justice in the Irish Jurist, the Holdsworth Law Review, the Juridical Review, Criminology and Criminal Justice, the Irish Probation Journal, Administration, the International Journal of Insurance Law, Irish Current Law Statutes Annotated, Cambrian Law Review, the European Journal of Criminology, International Review of Victimology,the Northern Ireland Legal Quarterly, the International Journal of Evidence and Proof, and the Journal of Higher Education.  

He has obtained circa €1,556,000 in funding most of which relates to criminal justice research.
