Biography

Dr Tina O’Toole is a literary scholar with research expertise in Irish writing, the history of sexualities, and migrant and transnational literatures. In 2016, she won the University of Limerick Excellence in Teaching Award. Her books include The Irish New Woman (Palgrave Macmillan, 2013); Women Writing War: Ireland 1880-1922 (UCD Press, 2016; co-edited with Gillian McIntosh & Muireann O’Cinnéide); and Irish Literature: Feminist Perspectives (Carysfort Press, 2008; co-edited with Patricia Coughlan). She has edited journal issues including a special issue of Éire-Ireland: Journal of Irish Studies (2012; co-edited with Piaras Mac Éinrí) on “New Approaches to Irish Migration”. 

Dr O’Toole worked as Principal Project Researcher on the Women in Irish Society Project at University College Cork (funded under PRTLI 1; see www.ucc.ie/wisp) from 1999-2002. This archival research led to the publication of The Dictionary of Munster Women Writers (2005) which she edited, and a study of the second-wave Irish Women’s Movement, Documenting Irish Feminisms (2005; co-authored with Linda Connolly). She held a Women’s Studies Fellowship at the University of Ottawa in 2001; an IRCHSS Post-Doctoral fellowship at UCC in 2002; and an Irish Studies Fellowship at Queen’s University Belfast in 2003.

Having joined UL as a lecturer in English in 2004, she was appointed Assistant Dean (Academic Affairs) for the Faculty of Arts, Humanities & Social Science in 2005 for a three-year term. She has served twice as subject head of English (2006-9; 2014-present), and as Course Director for the BA New Media & English (2009-12) and the BA English & History (2014-15). She is now Course Director for the MA English at the School of English, Irish, and Communication.

O'Toole was an elected board member of the Royal Irish Academy Committee for Literatures in English (2009-13)
. An executive member of the International Association for the Study of Irish Literatures (one of the main international associations in the profession) 2013-2017, she served as Treasurer over the same period, and as an editorial board member of the Irish University Review (Edinburgh University Press). She is currently a board member of the Munster Literature Centre.





 

Research Interests

Tina O’Toole studies and teaches Irish literature and cultural studies; her work focuses on women’s agency, dissident sexualities, and diasporic and transnational positions and representations. She is a specialist on the literature of the fin de siècle and on Irish prose of the long twentieth century. She has also published on feminist theory and activism, and on migrant and transnational literatures.
