The concept of chromatic modulation and the advantages of the method for optical fibre based sensing are briefly described. In particular the possibility of evolving a unified system for monitoring several different parameters in an industrial environment is indicated. The industrial potential of the approach is illustrated by reference to its use for the in-service monitoring of power circuit breakers which are used for protecting electric power transmission and distribution systems.
