and Avatars, Aileen examines the different registers of ‘identity’
performed through Irish (traditional) music in the Diasporic sphere. The presentation draws on extensive fieldwork
and historical research carried out in Chicago and focuses on the tensions
between the role of Irish music in the mediation of expressions of public/civic
sentimentality and private, emigrant/ethnic experience
