This essay introduces a section of the Journal of Art Historiography, edited by Niamh NicGhabhann, on the historiography of Irish art. This essay traces the current discourse on the historiography of Irish art, and introduces and contextualises the essays in this edited section, including contributions by Mary Jane Boland, Una Walker, Riann Coulter, Gabriel Gee and Nicholas Johnson.
