This presentation provides an account on how the Mathematics Learning
Centre (MLC) at the University of Limerick identifies and supports at-risk
service mathematics (Science and Technology) students in their first year of
undergraduate studies. The diagnostic test that has been administered to
students in these groups since 1998 will be described, as well as the
information that this test has provided on at-risk students over the years
since its inception. The presentation also details how these students are
supported by the MLC in their third-level mathematical studies and quantifies students’
current uptake of the provisions that have been put in place. Methods currently
employed for catering for mature adult learners who are beginning undergraduate
studies are also reported on.
