The e-lang project, which belongs to the wider ECLM (European Centre for Modern Languages) programme entitled “Languages at the Heart of Learning”, aims at developing language learners’ digital literacy by providing the basis for a teaching and learning methodology which integrates new technologies. In this project, we propose an approach that combines online interactions with a critical use of digital tools and resources to develop linguistic and communication skills as well as intercultural skills. In this presentation, we will first present the approach guiding the project, the socio-interactional approach, which places social interactions at the heart of its definition of tasks. We will advocate to engage learners in real-world tasks (i.e., tasks occurring in everyday/real life) thus including social interactions with people who do not belong to the teaching-learning process. We will particularly focus on tasks taking place on the social/participative web, also known as web 2.0 and give examples of such tasks to illustrate this concept.
