This article is a considered response to the major 1766-page study of Co. Wexford's townland names published by the Placenames Branch in 2016. In addition to reviewing this study the article also contains original research on dating the emergence of the very common element 'baile' in Irish placenames and on the anglicisation of another common element, 'buaile', as '-bally' in central and eastern Ireland.
