This seminar-workshop seeks to explore extensively the implications of the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) for teaching and assessment practices in respect of literary and cultural content in the HE modern languages sector. The CEFR is the standard reference establishing and describing learner levels for European languages, and is widely employed in Europe and beyond as a sophisticated and reliable gauge of students’ linguistic competences. Its implications for those ‘content’-related elements of modern language programmes (of which literary and cultural studies are typically key components) are both significant and under-explored.
