Social media campaigns highlighting and condemning sexual violence against women have gathered momentum in recent years, for example in relation to the #metoo movement, exposing cases of sexual assault and harassment in the US since 2017, and through the #NeverRapedNeverReported campaign in Canada in 2014. These feminist hashtag campaigns have been identified as “a powerful tactic for fighting gender iniquities around the world” (Clark, 2016). Building on this research, our study examines the influence of “digital feminist activism” (Mendes, Ringrose and Keller, 2018) on national media reporting on two high profile court cases involving alleged sexual violence against women.
