The concept behind this book is to foster an intercultural approach to the design of language learning materials, one which values the learner culture and uses it as a way into the target language and target language culture. The book is conceived as an intercultural materials development ‘toolkit’. It offers practitioners the critical, research and practical tools to develop materials situated within and thus relevant to, their own contexts, catering to learner diversity (i.e. from various language backgrounds including multilingual backgrounds) and which purposefully integrate a ‘critical’ cultural component. The book is grounded in theory and international practice; it is informed by a materials-focused needs analysis conducted internationally.
