Associate Professor Anna Chatzi (Department Nursing and Engineering) and Associate Professor Kyriakos Kourousis (School of Engineering) are sharing their own and their students’ experiences in using Concept Maps along with more traditional assessment tools. Based on a pilot publication, they explain how they embedded Concept Maps into their teaching. Anna has introduced the Concept Map to her promoting safety within a healthcare context module and together with the co-lecturer used it through the module’s lectures. Students had already gained familiarity throughout the semester when they faced the Concept Map into their final exam along with Multiple Choice Questions and open-ended questions. Anna’s aim was to compare students’ performance across the three types of assessment and check Concept Map’s reliability. Kyriakos used Concept Maps with Multiple Choice Questions on the three formative assessments of his module on airworthiness (aviation technical regulations) and recorded students’ performance. Kyriakos’ aim was to investigate the Concept Maps usability for novice users and how progressively the students developed the synthetic mindset required for modules combining technical and non-technical topics, such as regulations and their connection with professional (engineering) practice.
