A plethora of evidence suggests that autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with metabolic disturbances. While many rare inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs) are reported in patients with ASD (􏰀igman et al., 2021) many children with ASD have metabolic abnormalities that cannot be linked to a specific IEM. In addi- tion, despite probable contribution by self-imposed dietary restrictions (Yule et al., 2021) and toxicities (O’Neal et al., 2020) to some metabolic abnormalities found in ASD, the origin of metabolic abnormalities is unknown in a majority.
